Living with anxiety is hard - and it affects people in different ways.
Anxiety certainly does not care who you are; white, black, tall, short, fat, skinny, and everything else. If you have it, you have it. No amount of screaming at the walls will change that.
However there is, to quote Star Wars "a new hope"
Studies and trials have been happening for some years now, helping people through anxiety with virtual reality goggles.
If you have ever used these in a game or mobile phone app, you might well know that they are very realistic.
I certainly remember sitting in a VR rollercoaster and falling over.
Apart from the slight embarrassment, the one thing that stood out to me more than anything was the encapsulating feeling of being there in that moment.
A study has added to research showing that virtual reality (VR) can be helpful to help treat claustrophobia (fear of closed spaces). This was published in the Journal of Medical Signals and Sensors, in 2018.
Now here is the great thing, we are all individuals, unique, and anxiety attacks us in different ways. My partner is anxious about leaving the house, he gets "worked up" (his words) about the most mundane tasks, (mundane to those who do not suffer) like cleaning or even making something to eat.
As VR is in itself virtual, we can create any scenario to assist with your anxiety. Or as the research from 2017 put it
VR, allows users to experience a sense of presence in a computer-generated three-dimensional environment
One company in England. Is helping patients curb social anxiety with their new virtual reality tool. The tool has been designed to treat a variety of mental health conditions associated with anxiety, including depression, agoraphobia, and schizophrenia.
I have also seen some companies that offer the same for fears of things like spiders and clowns.
